Why does everyone seem to be obsessed/concerned with the world ending? From classic authors like Robert Frost to modern novels such as "Life As We Knew It," all the way back to the Mayan calendar. And none of us can forget the great computer crash of 2000 (yeah right). Since the dawn of time the destruction of the Earth has been something contemplated by all.
In Robert Frosts' poem Fire and Ice he talks about how he thinks the world will end. Of course Robert Frost took a more figurative approach than others but in his own way he made a major contribution to the end of the world concept. In novels like "Life As We Knew It," a more modern and detailed approach was taken. And lets not forget the Mayan calendar.
So many different theories have been proposed about how the world will end; nuclear weapons, global warming, war, ect. So many theories, but that's all they are; theories. There is no one who can honestly say the world will end on this day at this time. So why do we spend our time hypothesizing something that can't be foretold. The simple fact is, we won't know when the world will end until it actually ends. But no matter what, people will insist on predicting and theorizing the who's why's and when's until they are blue in the face. Or until the world really does end once and for all and they realize that they could have done so much more with their life than try to guess when the world might end.
The world might be here for the one hundred thousand years or more, or it won't be here tomorrow and neither will we. So why are we wasting our time wondering about something that is inevitable and something that we have no control over? The world will end someday...or maybe it won't. The point is that we don't know and will never know so why spend so much time worrying about something that can't be controlled or stopped or prevented.
